nutrimentum
This transmutation under Venus brings us to nutrimentum, also referred to as cibatio, which means ‘feeding the new’. This phase is about nourishment and here it is said that ‘the red sulphur [Sol] is digested by the silvery moon after its purgation’. Sol has sunk even deeper here and the snake’s movements are rupturing the egg in a myriad of tiny fissures. As the Rosarium says:
Here Sol in turned black, becoming with
Mercurius philosophorum one heart.
Sol’s blackness is almost nigredo-like – and there is a link, but it is different. Here it is more like depression, being brought low, constrained by physical form. But then what takes place is a feeding – in the sense of Sol feeding from the feminine, from what Luna has left inside him. What becomes clear is that nutrimentum is an awakening of a man to his own feminine, not as anima but as nourishment. Deeper than that, what we also have is Sol feeding from the earth herself. He is finding his heart of earth, the feeling that really embodies him by connecting him to matter as something living and warm, warm as the earth soaked with sun, just as all food is grown and filled with sunlight.
So here what we need to do is open our hearts to the earth. And then again we will find Mercurius, who is always the energy of life.
